Your new puppy

Congratulations on selecting your new German Shepherd puppy. You can look forward to a rich and rewarding time together. However, there are a number of responsibilities that come with owning a dog.

HEALTH CARE
Your puppy has been wormed and vaccinated while in our care, this will need to be continued by you. We suggest you discuss a suitable program with your Vet.

The GSD (German Shepherd Dog) has a very easy coat to look after, brushing weekly is adequate, and your dog will appreciate more often. Bathing need only be done when necessary i.e., dog has been in salt water or is dirty.

Claws need to be trimmed on occasions, this should also be discussed with your Vet.

EXERCISE
The GSD is an active dog, bred for stamina and endurance. They appreciate daily exercise, but are content with whatever you can do. Invariably they love to run and swim, and enjoy ball games etc.

For the sake of hip and elbow development your dog should not jump until 12 months of age (i.e. in and out of the car etc.).

TRAINING
The GSD is an intelligent dog and can be prone to boredom. It is also quite a big dog and has the potential to become unruly. Obedience training is strongly recommended for your dog as it will allow your dog to become a well behaved member of our society. Also a dog which is under control will be a pleasure to own and be around.

FEEDING
This will be addressed on a separate sheet, possibly more than anything else this will determine the well being of your dog and should be given considerable thought.
